Unit 2 Assignment 2 Report

1. The Outline of my Production is about men physically getting abused. I will explore the correlation between Domestic Abuse by men or women on men. I will need to get proof that that is true, by researching on the internet. Men can get abused by a family member or a random citizen. Most of the men that get abused, will get abused by men. For example: Dad's, male citizens, brothers, cousins and more, or even a man that you don't know but this person abuses you.

2. My Unique Selling Point is to make my short film helpful to my audience. So I decided to put in a feature for the audience, which is a number that men can call for advice, if they are physically being abused or even if their not getting abused at all. The number will pop up just before the adverts start and it will be a free call. A person will be talking when the the feature pops up, he will talking about what the number is for and how the number is free.

3. Domestic Violence is a violent behavior that a person does to another person for no reason or for a reason. People mostly do it for no reason. Physical abuse is a physical force of violence that can result in pain or impairment. It is defined as forceful physical behavior that can accidentally cause harm to others, which is including: hitting, slapping, punching and many more.

4.
This graph shows that men can be abused too. On the graph, men that get abused has nearly gone up to 40%, which is nearly half of the percentage. This can be a real shock to people, as some in this world think that woman get abused way more than men.

This is a statistic that shows men can sometimes be abused more than women, in the NISVS. The victims on this statistic increases every company, except the last one. The NISVS has an increased amount of victims than other ones.

The purpose of my production is to let teenagers and know that men can get abused to; not to let them get worried or scared, just to make sure that they are aware. My extended purpose of my production is to demystify  masculinity and the barriers this causes. For example, men that get abused or experienced it, cannot admit and express their feelings that they get abused. The copyright issues that I will be facing in my short film, will be most probably scenes from other films, or phrases from other films. Not just the acting but the research that will gather can be written word for word. I also may get copyright issues by taking story's from other domestic violence films. It could have the same entrance or the same ending.

Requirements

Here is a list of the requirements that I will need for my production:
  •  Camera
  • Tri-pod
  • Script
  • Storyboard
  • Camera charger
  • Backup memory card
I did a bit of Primary Research by creating a Questionnaire, to understand what the public thinks about men suffering over abuse. I know the correct answer for each one of these questions, so not only that I wanted to find out what the public thinks about men suffering over abuse, but I also wanted to find out if they get the right answer, or not. Here are the questions...

Q1: Do you think men get abused more by women or men?

Person A: Men
Person B: Women
Person C: Men
Person D: Don't Know
Person E: Men
Person F: Don't Know
Person G: Women
Person H: Men
Person I: Men
Person J: Women
Real answer Men

Q2 What do you think the percentage is out of men getting abused?

Person A: 24%
Person B: 13%
Person C: 22%
Person D: 26%
Person E: 18%
Person F: 34%
Person G: 15%
Person H: 31%
Person I: 27%
Person J: 25%
Real answer: 37%

Q3 In 2009 a man called Ray Rice, got kicked of the NFL, for punching and knocking out his wife. In the same year a woman named Hope Solo, was only charged for domestically hitting her nephew at a party.
Do you think it is fair that; a man got kicked out for hitting his wife, but a woman only got charged for hitting her nephew?

Person A: "No, they should both get the same punishment".
Person B: "Yes, because the man was hitting his own wife, loves her and if he can do it to his wife; then he can do it to anyone. Also the woman might not like her Nephew, her Nephew might be really mean to her".
Person C: "I'm not being sexist, but men are more violent than women, so it is more likely that the man could do it again than the woman. My answer is Yes it is fair".

When I gathered up my results from my questionnaire, I then decided to analyse them into pie charts.

Target Audience
My target audience are ages 14 and up, but it can also be for adults that need advice. The show will start at 7.00pm so people can watch it after their dinner, instead of broadcasting it even later near nighttime when the public go to sleep.

Cost
It will cost me 2k-50k to broadcast my show on the TV. I will also need to buy the requirements, so I can use them while preparing for the show or using them while the show is broadcast.

Conclusion and Aim
At the end of the film hopefully everyone that watched that it will be aware that men can get abused too and that its not just a small amount of men in the world that get abused. My aim was to help men that have experienced abuse and to make sure younger men are aware.

I will also need to buy the requirements, so I can use them while preparing for the show or using them while the show is broadcast. Although I do not own 2 to 50k, I have decided to continue my path by going down the A-Level, or University root, where some students may have to create a production in order to complete their course. This will be an easy root for me, since it will be for free and no extra cost. Since now I do not have to worry about the 2 to 50k, I can now focus on spending my money elsewhere. such as:
  • Crew
  • Cast
  • Equipment
Also there are some Administration costs, such as:
  • Printing of scripts
  • Food and drink for the crew

Unit 2 Assignment 1

Topics of Research Homework
Costing/Budgeting for a short film -

Copied and pasted from a website
Reference
"It matters how many pages you have. For, example if you have 25 pages, it will cost £2000".
I got this from using a Word Search and typing in...

This will help me in my short film, because it tells me how many pages is £2000.

You should pay for sound and probably the camera man. Find someone who lives near you and just ask if they will help. If your project is interesting enough then most DP's that are not super established just want to keep building their reel. And if you are shooting something that would look good on their reel then oftentimes that is enough to get them involved. But I wouldn't get hung up on specifically getting a red.
Expect to pay a few hundred on sound.

Make sure you are recording to a separate system and that your audio guy expects to use wireless lavalieres. If he/she doesn't have them then I would look elsewhere. You can typically get by on your first couple projects without paying the rest of the crew. You should try to as soon as you can as you get more experienced, but your pay to the crew should be done by you in pre production by doing your best to schedule, cast, write, scout and plan the hell out of your project. If you do that and create a professional shoot environment, then people will want to work with you for free because it is already a solid alternative to the other projects they typically work on. Make the production a pleasure and people will beat on your door to work for free. That being said, people still appreciate the effort of giving them $25-50. It's not much, but it shows that you value them and it makes it a job for them that they now will owe you something.

I got this information from a website called 'Filmmaker Forum'. I got this site by typing up on a word search, "how much is it to produce a short film" and clicking on the first link. This is useful to my project, because it is telling me how much I would need to spend on my crew for my short film.

commissioning

I got this page from a Website called, "BBC Commissioning". It shows how much Nations and English Regions is for using Documentary series and more.

This will help me in my short film, because it is about the budget for a short film. So then i will know how much English Regions will cost, from making a short film.

Phrase Search

Reference - I got a book about men being abused from a book called Cook, PW. 2009. Abused Men: The Hidden Side of Domestic Violence. I got this book by typing in on a phrase search called 'Google', Men Being Abused and then I clicked on books. You will then see this books name.

I have used Index to find me a good page about Domestic Violence against Men. This index will help me in my music video, because it tells me two pages are about Men being abused, so a lot of information to help me.

My short film is about men being abused by woman and men. I felt that this book would be great for my short film, because its about men being abused and it tells how to help them. This book will help me and give me ideas.  Underneath is the introduction to this book and it tells me that there have been published research articles regarding men who have been physically abused by their domestic partners. However, it is mostly men who abuse men than woman abusing men.

 Men are abused too

Most domestic violence is directed at women but men are abused too, in both heterosexual and gay relationships.

Seeking help as an abused man can be hard. You may feel there’s nowhere to turn or that no-one will take you seriously. Perhaps you’re ashamed about what is happening or feel like you have done something to deserve it. You may be worried that people will think you are less of a man for ‘allowing’ yourself to be abused.
No-one deserves to be abused by the person they love. You have the right to be respected
and live in safety

 http://www.refuge.org.uk/get-help-now/help-for-men/men-are-abused-too/
This website tries to help men who are being abused and what they do to stop it. This company who created this website, is called 'Refuge'.
_____________________________________________________________

Reference= I got this from a website called http://www.refuge.org.uk/get-help-now/help-for-men/men-are-abused-too/ This link and page will help me in my short film, because it is about men can be abused too, not just women.

This will help me in my short film, because it tells me that men are abused too and this is a write up for men that are being abused.

Reference - I got a Journal about men being abused from a book called: 'Yoga Journal'. I got this Journal by typing up on a word search called 'Google', Domestic Violence Against Men, using a magazine word search. This will be good for my short film because, its about men creating groups; to help men from being abused to raise awareness. One of the methods i used to extract information was Skim Reading. From this I found out that men are being abused in this Journal.

My short film is going to be about: men getting abused by woman and men. So this journal will be useful. My short film will also most likely be shown on 'YouTube', because it will cost less and it will be easier to show the film on YouTube. The people who will be exhibiting it, will be teenagers from 14-18. This is a charity to help men to protect themselves by woman and also men who are homosexual.
_________________________________________________________________________________

Reference - When I typed on a Phrase Search: Domestic Violence against men. I then came across a Newspaper from Mail Online. It has a question to people saying: why are men becoming victims of domestic violence? This is by Hoyle, A. 2013. Why are men becoming victims of Domestic Violence Then it tells you that

  • More married men suffer abuse from their spouse than married women
  • These days, women move more in men's worlds
  • They earn and compete with as much aggression as their male colleagues
  • Women are also fast catching up with men in the alcohol stakes

This will help me to make a storyline with my short film, because it is about men becoming victims of Domestic Violence. This will also give me ideas too add a better storyline to my short film.
_________________________________________________________________________________

Reference - This is a Handout from Surrey. Gibbons, L. 2013. Raising awarness about Domestic Abuse DVD. I got this handout by a teacher as a introduction to the distrubuiton of Domestic Abuse films. I then Scanned this book looking for key points. I have highlighted abused men, because that is what my short film will be about. In addition, it tells you the type of people who consume short films alike to mine such as: professionals which are: Pharmacists, Chiropodists, GP's and many others to continue promoting the message about Domestic Violence and how it is a crime.

This will help me in my short film, because it tells you where short abuse films are being distubuted such as: wide range of events and training courses. Raising awareness is one of my goals for my short film, so to stop people abusing men.

I think that this Charity would be useful for my short film, because my short film is about men being victims of Domestic Violence. I got this Charity website by typing up on a word search: charities of men being victims and then clicking on the 5th link. There are some information that is relevent on this Charity website for my short film. For example...

_________________________________________________________________________________

Oerman. A. 2014. Why isn't Hope Solo facing the same consequences as NFL players Ray Rice and Adrian Peterson? The Other Side of Domestic Violence: Male Victims.

After reading through this magazine about domestic violence, I made sure that I read it with concentration. Here is my summary, a star of the Seattle Reign FC soccer team, was allegedly punching her 17 year-old nephew and half- sister at a family party. But she didn't get banned from the Soccer team, but was charged. Then, the same thing happened again, but this time it was man named: Adrian Peterson. He was in the NFL and he abused his wife. This shows that men will get in more trouble from hitting his wife, than a woman allegedly punching her nephew.
______________________________________________________________________________

I copied a paragraph from the magazine and pasted it on to a word document. I then used a Underline Passage to use for my short film.

My short film, is about Domestic violence against men, so I thought this is a good paragraph for my short film. It also says about a nephew (man) getting allegedly punched by Hope Solo. This will also help me in my short film, because it is about a man getting punched.

Unit 2 Assignment 1 Research

Physical Abuse Research

Age at First Maltreatment. A little more than half (53%) of the abused children in the Sullivan and Knutson (1998) study were maltreated at 4 years of age or younger.

Physical Abuse doesn't always happen in the streets or in houses. It can also happen on the internet and people can be physically intimidating. The ratings for men doing physical abuse, is (72%). But the ratings for women doing physical abuse, is (28%). So it is mostly men, carrying Knifes around the street than women. Not just streets but also in school, where kids get bullied. Getting abused for their lunch money or stealing their phones.

I received some information by using a word search on ‘Google’ and typing in ‘charities for physical abuse’. Then i clicked on ‘Charity Matters Physical Abuse’.
It then brought me to this page, that tells you what charities there are. This website tells you how Physical Abuse, is unacceptable and it also tells you, the best charities for Physical Abuse. But that is only if you are finding a charity your topic. So this website is good if you want to research charity matters of Physical Abuse. If you want to give money to this charity then their phone number is on this website.

This definition about Physical Abuse is right, but its not enough information. It can also be about bullying at school and blackmailing.

Physical Bullying

I am now researching Physical Bullying. I got this page by going on Google and typing in Physical Bullying. I then clicked on 'physical bullying - Bullying Statistics'.

This website tells me what Physical Bullying actually is.
